Nearly 50 years after the U.S. government allegedly recovered a crashed flying saucer at Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947, Pocket Books published the military memoirs of Col. Philip Corso, one of the U. S. Army’s most unusual officers. THE DAY AFTER ROSWELL focuses on Corso’s bombshell claims that, in his position at Army Research and Development, he gave debris from the Roswell saucer to American corporations to help develop components such as those found on the saucer. Corso allegedly told the corporations they were receiving foreign technology procured through espionage, and he instructed them to patent the resulting "reverse-engineered" technology as though it were their own so that no one would point to the U.S. government as the source.
The result of this "seeding" was the technology boom of the 1960s and ë70s. According to Corso, the Roswell saucer yielded such developments as transistors and integrated circuit chips, fiber optics, night-vision equipment, Kevlar armor, supertenacity fibers, stealth technology, electron particle beam weapons, and lasers. The development of so-called Star Wars (Strategic Defense Initiative) defenses, he claimed was not directed at the Soviets so much as at the alien threat, which world governments have been covering up. All of this makes THE DAY AFTER ROSWELL either one of the most important books ever written Ö or one of the most audacious hoaxes.
What gave the claims credibility was Corso’s personal history. He was a key Army Intelligence officer who played an important role in the allied occupation of Rome from 1944 to 1947, and he helped bring German rocket scientists to the U.S. He served on General MacArthur’s staff in Korea, followed by a stint on President Eisenhowers’s national Security Council. From 1961 to 1963, Corso supervised the Foreign Technology section of Army R&D under the legendary Lt. Gen. Arthur Trudeau, who, Corso claims, directed him to seed the alien technology.
Corso ended his career with 21 medals, but he was forced out of the Army because of his charges that communist agents infiltrated civilian intelligence agencies. After his retirement, Corso sat on the staffs of Senators James Eastland and Strom Thurmond.
Even skeptics of the UFO story concede that Corso had a Forrest Gump-like career, from blowing the whistle on Russian missiles in Cuba to serving on the staff of RichardRussell while Russell was a member of the Warren Commission.
We recently spoke with William Birnes, the man who co-authored the autobiography of Colonel Corso, who died a year after the book was published. Birnes has impressive credentials of his own: He has written seven true crime and other books (including THE DOWNING OF TWA FLIGHT 800 and SIGNATURE KILLERS), and served as a literary agent, book editor and publisher, and TV and video producer. Since THE DAY AFTER ROSWELL came out, his company has become the publisher of the AMERICAN UFO magazine.
FATE: How did you first find out about Colonel Corso’s knowledge of Roswell?
BIRNES: I met him through a motion picture company in Los Angeles that had originally engaged Colonel Corso to be their consultant about the history of prisoners of war. I was discussing the secret history of POWs when he revealed that he had knowledge of the Army’s records about Roswell.
FATE: What was your reaction and what led you to believe he was telling the truth?
BIRNES: I was shocked. He was right in his placement in the government for someone to know these things. Also, he had been proven right several times before when he made several outrageous statements. He was attacked for these things, but when he turned out right, no one acknowledged it. He claimed that American POWs were left behind in the Korean War. The documentation came out later. Second, he said we knew and the Russians knew the U2 flights were INTENDED to PROVOKE an antiaircraft reaction and that they would shoot one down some day. The National Archives had the smoking gun, as it turned out. Number three, the LEE HARVEY OSWALD story. Corso was crucified by those who said he was in a right wing conspiracy for saying there were two Lee Harvey Oswalds and the FBI knew this. In the transcripts that were published in 1997, we have J. Edgar Hoover saying, "You know, Mr. President, we have records of more that one Lee Harvey Oswald."
FATE: Speaking of the Kennedy assassination, Corso was an advisor to a member of the WARREN COMMISSION. What did he learn about the assassination?
BIRNES: That the Commission was a COVER-UP and President Johnson knew it. Johnson believed the Cubans were behind it, but the United States was not going to go to war with Communist Europe and lose 40 MILLION PEOPLE in a missile exchange over the death of one man. Johnson said, "We’ll eat it." Gerald Ford, by his own admission, moved the bullet wound in the report from between the shoulder blades to the neck to fit the cover story. Everyone high in government knew about this.
FATE: Who is in charge of the U.S. government’s secret program monitoring UFOs, according to Corso, and have all presidents presumably been aware of it?
BIRNES: Presidents are aware of the space command that tracks all the "fast walkers" of any kind that appear in space, and Reagan said he knew twice. He said it once to Gorbachev on the yacht in Scandinavia and once before the United Nations. Corso never had any direct contact with what he calls the Working Group, but he knew some who did, like Hermann Oberth, Wernher von Braun, and Robert Sarbacher.
FATE: With all the secrecy, why did the government allow a book from an insider to be published, and what has been the public response?
BIRNES: The book, caught them (government officials) by surprise because we had no pre-publicity by design. There is nothing in the book that says it is top secret. No one in the book named as having anything to do with UFOs is alive, also by design. The government set up this policy of publicly denying UFOs existed in fear of a repeat of the PANIC caused by ORSON WELLES " WAR OF THE WORLDS" radio broadcast in 1938. It also believes that if the full extent of our knowledge of alien technology became known, it would cause the ECONOMY and GOVERNMENT to CRUMBLE. The government is trying to transition things to build the technology into society. There are ENERGY DEVICES that exist that would put oil companies OUT of BUSINESS, which would completely dislocate the economy. The government allowed the book to be published. Corso said this was part of the gradual plan of ALLOWING THE PUBLIC to DISCOVER the TRUTH.
FATE: Did Lieutenant General Trudeau leave anything that would lend support to Corso’s claims, or is it possible Corso used Trudeau’s status to further a personal agenda to promote belief in aliens?
BIRNES: They had known each other since the 1950s. I have Trudeau’s memoirsÖHe refers to NIHÖhis code for "NOT INVENTED HERE"Öregarding his problems disseminating the technology. Tellingly, he discusses Corso’s career prior to working at (U.S. Army) R&D and then is suddenly silent. Also, Corso was only overtly in his R&D position for 90 days, and then he went black and what he was doing for Trudeau the next couple of years was very secret.
FATE: Have others who know something about either the technology or UFO programs come out in support of what the colonel stated in the book?
BIRNES: The AMERICAN COMPUTER COMPANY in New Jersey claimed that they have RECORDS that in 1947 the ARMY gave MATERIALS to BELL LABS that came from ALIENS, which is exactly what Trudeau told Corso. John Alexander, who was in the Army non-lethal weapons program code for remote viewingÖsome years after Corso had his own involvement in that program, confirmed there was a program to REVERSE ENGINEER the ALIEN TECHNOLOGY.
FATE: There have been charges that the book’s details about the Roswell crash and subsequent operations vary from witness accounts, such as when and whether the debris was taken to Fort Riley.
BIRNES: Corso never claimed to have any firsthand knowledge of Roswell, and the first chapter was added at the publisher’s request to provide an introduction to Roswell based on others’ testimony. As for Fort Riley, you have to remember that right at that time the Army and Air Force, which had previously been one, were splitting and they each wanted their own materials.
FATE: What did the Air Force contribute to American technology through use of its own portion of the debris?
BIRNES: The STEALTH technology, for one thing, but the Navy also had its own ROSWELL MATERIAL and incorporated what it learned into its design of submarines. Colonel Corso’s counterpart in the Navy and people who had spoken with him years ago CORROBORATED much of what Corso said from the Navy’s perspective. The Army had the most impact on non-military technology.
Fate: What about claims that the transistor was in development and patents filed long before Corso allegedly took the alien version to Bell?
BIRNES: Of course it was being developed, but prior to 1947 they couldn’t get it to work, until they saw that the ALIEN CIRCUITRY used PURE SILICON doped with resistant materials to control the flow of electrons. The first working transistor was in 1948.
FATE: Corso states that high-energy and particle-beam weapons were launched to INTIMIDATE the ALIENS, but ufologist Karl Pfock says no such weapons have been launched.
BIRNES: It isn’t classified that we now have SATELLITES with these WEAPONS. Look at the Army missile (Space and Missile Defense Command, http://www.smd.army.mil) Website. Down in Huntsville they talk about launched weapons. Some people believe the flying triangles people report are a secret program using these.
FATE: Why does Corso say German scientists Hermann Oberth and Wernher von Braun were at bases in New Mexico and involved in the Roswell developments when, according to UFO skeptic Philip Klass, they were elsewhere?
BIRNES: The Alamogordo test site was a field office for the Air Materiel Command. They (Oberth and von Braun) were in Huntsville and New Mexico, and they certainly weren’t going to announce they were involved in secret projects in New Mexico.
FATE: Corso suggests that the aliens may have BASES on the MOON.
BIRNES: That speculation came from Willy Ley, and that was why Project Horizon was developed to try to place a base of our own on the moon, which never happened.
FATE: If we now have the power to fight the aliens, why do ABDUCTIONS and CATTLE MUTILATIONS continue to proliferate?
BIRNES: We have some ability to stand some ground, but we can’t be everywhere to stop these things. But we don’t want to because we are LEARNING about the ALIENS through the ABDUCTEES. Read David Jacobs’ THE THREAT. The GOVERNMENT debriefs (abductees), sometimes in invasive and unpleasant ways.

THE MAN BEHIND THE FACE ON MARS
Richard C. Hoagland was a consultant to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center from 1975 to 1980. During the historic Apollo missions to the Moon, he was science advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS News. He is the author of many scientific articles, as well as The Monuments of Mars, and he was the first to propose the possible existence of deep ocean life on Europa, Jupiter’s second moon.
Hoagland organized the Independent Mars Investigation in 1984 and four years later began the Mars Mission (now the Enterprise Mission). In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious International Angstrom Medal for excellence in Science for his investigations relating to hyperdimensional physics and "successful decoding of a redundant mathematics and geometry found in a complex of potential artifacts on the planet Mars." Since then, Hoagland and his team have been investigating more than 30 years worth of previously hidden data from U.S. and Soviet missions to the Moon.
FATE: In the summer of 1976, NASA’s Viking took a series of pictures of the Martian landscape in the area known as Cydonia. Upon later examination, the photos seemed to show a human face. What did you think when you first saw the photos?
HOAGLAND: These were part of 100,000 pictures that Viking took. When we were shown the initial image, we were told that when the spacecraft took a second frame a few hours later, the whole thing had gone away, because it was a trick of lighting. And we believed them.
Looking back, there are two very important things that I wish I had done. One is ask to see the second picture nobody asked to see the second picture! Now, this is very important because it was a claim based on NASA’s reputation that we believe without any substantial information.
FATE: Right, why would you doubt them?
HOAGLAND: This is the whole problem with NASA.
What’s interesting is what revolves around NASA as the central thesis: the search for life. That’s the only reason NASA exists. When NASA kept claiming that it couldn’t find anything out there, poll numbers and demographics fell off in terms of support. When all the photographs they showed us were craters and other barren landscapes, public interest just went away.
I was there that summer of 1976. I was following the politics behind the scenes, and I know there were some key scientists urging a more provocative position regarding Viking and the search for life. They were within the agency part of NASA and they were summarily rejected.
At the time, it didn’t make sense. In hindsight, it still doesn’t make sense except we now understand why it doesn’t make sense.
FATE: Why is that?
HOAGLAND: Because there’s a hidden agenda.
FATE: And what’s the hidden agenda?
HOAGLAND: Well, the hidden agenda is that there are apparently two space programs. There’s the space program we’ve all seen. Those of us with connections have seen more of it than those who don’t have connections. I was a NASA consultant, science advisor to Walter Cronkite, and I’ve been in the thick of it from the beginning. So, there was that space program that we thought we had. And then, as part of this investigation and others, there is the beginning outline of the real space program the space program that the Brookings Institution warned NASA they shouldn’t tell us about if they found certain things because it would "destroy civilization."
FATE: What is the Brookings Institution?
HOAGLAND: The Brookings Institution is a major think tank in Washington. It’s been there for decades. It’s composed of academics, scholars, lawyers anybody who has an academic background and has areas of "expertise." These "think tanks" were put together after World War 11 to become like brain trusts for government, corporations, nonprofit institutions, and whatever. Brookings is one of the oldest and most "respected."
According to the paperwork, which we have on our site on the World Wide Web, in 1959 when it was formed NASA turned to Brookings to basically lay out the outline of the space program. Brookings took a year and did an extremely extensive survey of all the areas that NASA might make discoveries in, ranging from weather modifications to extraterrestrial life. In every area except one, Brookings recommended to NASA that it proceed full speed ahead.
With regard to extraterrestrial life and this is so amazing in the documents which we have posted on the web (the full summary of the reports) Brookings recommends to NASA that it probably could find, in the coming years, evidence of other "LIFE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM," either in the form of ruins or signals they were talking about radio signals at that point. They then recommended that NASA give serious consideration to not telling anybody.
On December l5, 1960, the New York Times picked this story up and made it a full-page headline: "GOVERNMENT REPORT WARNS THAT DISCOVERIES MAY TOPPLE CIVILIZATION." It is our belief now, compounded by additional evidence which comes in every day, that at that point the space program bifurcated it became two programs, one in public that would keep us little kiddies sleeping quietly, and the other space program that only a handful of the inner, "inner sanctum" ever got to see.
FATE: Do we know who these people are?
HOAGLAND: Well, some of them. It’s not my place to point fingers or name names, but some of them are "household names." You can use your imagination, or speculate or extrapolate if you want to. They appear a lot on television and some of them keep telling us that nothing interesting has been found. Now, that’s interesting because if something interesting has been found, that could have been part of their deal.
FATE: Why would that be?
HOAGLAND: Because Brookings said this would "DESTROY CIVILIZATION." Remember this is 1996. You and I belong to a generation for which the expectation that somebody’s out there is kind of second nature. But in the 1950’s we were dealing with a lot of paranoid, McCarthyesque, red haters, who were scared to death of a group of people called "commies." It’s so hard to put ourselves in that psychological position.
Can you imagine taking some farmer from Kansas and putting him in the position of having to confront the idea that he shares the universe with someone who may not look like him, isn’t born on this planet, and may have some kind of powers that verge on magic? Can you imagine the politics of the 1950’ when people were terrified of human beings who just happened to call themselves something different?
That’s what is so appalling about this: we have done this to ourselves. We have created these incredible paranoid fantasies about "They’re going to come and eat us."
FATE: You can certainly see the difference in terms of the alien-attack films from the fifties to current films. We have a much more open view, at least the film industry does, in terms of this.
HOAGLAND: Right. One night when I was on his show, Larry King said to me about the Brookings document, "Well, this is a 30 year-old document." He misses the point! There are documents and policies and beliefs decades old, even thousands of years old the bible, the Magna Carta, The Constitution and we still believe and follow them.
The evidence is in that there was a paper trail, a policy recommendation from people who were paid to make those recommendations by NASA. I happened to work with one of those people named Margaret Mead!
FATE: Famous anthropologist. She did much of her work on the Samoans.
HOAGLAND: Yes, the Samoans who were destroyed by contact with so-called "high civilization." I used to run into Margaret in the hall of the American Museum of Natural History when I was working there. She was appointed president of the AAAS, which was a very prestigious position for a woman in those days the seventies.
Margaret was still very disturbed by what she had seen in the Pacific. We would talk about the space program and she was very concerned. Of course, I didn’t know that she had officially participated in a study which basically said, "if you find anybody don’t tell us because it will destroy us."
It’s like the classical story about Pandora’s Box. The idea is that if you don’t open the box, the horrors won’t come out. And there were people who had absolute power to keep the box closed. How did they do that? Well, you and I can’t walk to Mars or the Moon. It’s not a tourist trap yet. The only way that information of potential extra-terrestrials will ever get to the Earth unless the ETS decide to land someday is if this government or some other government decides to tell us.
NASA is the shining city on a hill. It’s going where no one has gone before; it is the best of human curiosity. Looked at that way, the visceral backlash against people like me, who are claiming that maybe this shining city was a cover for something else, is a very palatable, emotional reaction to being lied to by people who they never thought would lie to them because there was nothing to lie about.
It’s only when you lift up the covers and start looking at NASA and what it is doing as another government agency, where there are big things at stake, where if in fact serious academics thought we would destroy ourselves if we even knew about the existence of this "stuff," that other serious people would take great pains to make sure that nobody ever suspected what was out there.
FATE: How could that be done?
HOAGLAND: My colleagues and I have spent a great deal of time figuring out how this could be done. It turns out to be appallingly easy. Take the films of the Moon, for example. The films come back and go through only one or two people. All you have to do is make sure those people don’t blink, and you have completely changed history.
The way this all connects is that when the project scientist showed us the Viking pictures and made a joke and laughed, we all laughed with him because, of course, it was so absurd. We all knew that NASA’s highest objective was to find something alive out there that was the whole reason for Viking. So if the Viking scientists were laughing at this thing then of course it was laughable; it had to be laughable.
That was a deadly, terrible trap. These people did not tell us the truth. It started out with a claim that a picture had been taken a few hours later, but it turns out that technically that was impossible.
FATE: Because it would have been dark then.
HOAGLAND: Exactly. The earliest opportunity to take another picture was a month later. But no pictures were scheduled. Within the context of the mission it turns out that NASA lied to us. "ABSOLUTELY LIED." Because this is really interesting a few days before the second set of frames were taken, the landing site for the second landings was changed, so the region where the spacecraft was going to take new pictures of Cydonia no longer was going to be the intended landing site for the spacecraft.
They took a second set of frames at a different sun angle of the same site during the mission. And they did it in a time line when there was no reason to do it other than to try to find out what was really there.
So, from the beginning the lie has been built in. This was not a case of a mistake. Somebody from the beginning knew what they had and began a very careful, conscious cover-up.
Professor Stan McDaniels has written a review of this, including a careful documentation of all the weird politics that has gone on representatives and senators, like Diane Feinstein and John Glenn, who have been lied to by NASA over and over again.
The pattern of deception, I can say with great support and documentation, apparently has been in place since the beginning. We now have a document Brookings which tells us why.
FATE: So, what is the real hidden agenda?
HOAGLAND: I think the data itself presents us with a stunning possibility. Have you read Ray Bradbury’s book, "The Martian Chronicles"? His major thesis is about what might happen if the human species left its own planet, went to another world, and found "ITSELF." That’s what happened with the face on Mars.
We went to this alien world that we have never seen, ostensibly, and we’re looking down from orbit and, "lo and behold," we see "OURSELVES."
"THIS IS A SHOCK! THIS IS THE THING". One question goes to the heart of every "RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE" in the world; it is "WHO THE HELL ARE WE AND WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THIS PLACE?" And that is the real reason they freaked.
FATE: The basis issue is FEAR!
HOAGLAND: Well, FEAR is present in rigid BELIEF SYSTEMS. I think you’re perceptive in thinking that Brookings became the most incredibly convenient cover for this other, more deeply felt, objective. That takes us back to PANDORA’S BOX.
